Can you take the Life in the UK test in your language?
The Life in the UK test is normally taken in English. Home Office guidance says you can also take it in Welsh at a test centre in Wales, or in Scottish Gaelic in Scotland – but not in other languages. So in the end you need to recognise the key words – names, places, institutions – in English.
But understanding the material is much easier in the language you think in. Many people learn faster by reading a chapter in their own language first, then reading the same chapter in English and practising questions in English.
A study method for non-native speakers
- Read a chapter in your language to understand the story – the history, the system of government, the traditions.
- Read the same chapter in English and notice the key terms: Magna Carta, the House of Commons, the Youth Court, Remembrance Day.
- Answer practice questions in your language to check you understood.
- Switch to English and answer the same questions again.
- In the last weeks, do mock tests in English only, exactly like the real test.
Our app in 13 languages
Our app, Citizenship Prep, has the full question bank and the complete handbook in English. Premium translates every question, every explanation and the whole handbook into 13 languages, and you can switch between your language and English with one tap – ideal for the method above.
