Life in the UK test day – what to bring and what to expect

Updated 15 October 2026 · Independent study guide – not official government information.

Knowing what happens on the day removes a lot of stress. The most important thing is simple: bring the right ID.

What to bring

GOV.UK says you must bring the same ID you used to book the test. It must be your original ID – not a photocopy, a photo on your phone or a screenshot.

Your photo will be taken on the day to confirm your identity.

If you do not bring the correct ID, or you refuse to have your photo taken, you will not be able to take the test and you will not get a refund. Check your ID the night before, and make sure the name on it matches the name on your booking exactly.

Who can come with you

You cannot bring children or other family members to the test centre, so arrange childcare before your test day.

The test itself

  • You have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions.
  • The questions are based on the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.
  • You need 75% or more to pass – at least 18 correct answers.

The test is taken on a computer. Read each question carefully – some ask you to pick two answers, and some are true-or-false statements. With 45 minutes for 24 questions you have almost two minutes per question, which is plenty of time to read every option before you answer.

After the test

If you pass, you get a unique reference number. Keep it safe – you need it for your citizenship or settlement application. If you do not pass, you can book again, but you pay the fee each time. Read more about the pass mark and results.

A checklist for the day before

  • Original ID, the same one you booked with
  • Booking confirmation and the test centre address
  • Plan your journey and arrive in good time
  • Childcare arranged if you need it
  • One last mock test to warm up
