Who does not need to take the Life in the UK test?
Not everyone has to take the Life in the UK test. According to GOV.UK, you do not need to take the test if you:
- are under 18
- are 65 or over
- have passed it before – for example, if you are applying to become a citizen and already passed it as part of your settlement application
- have a long-term physical or mental condition – you must provide either an exemption form or a letter from a doctor confirming your condition
Passed it before? You do not need to take it again
The test result is not tied to one application. If you passed the Life in the UK test when you applied for indefinite leave to remain, you use the same pass when you apply for British citizenship. Keep your unique reference number (or, for tests taken before 17 December 2019, your letter with a test reference ID).
Long-term conditions
If a long-term physical or mental condition means you cannot take the test, you need either an exemption form or a letter from a doctor. If you can take the test but need support – for example extra equipment or help accessing the test centre – you can make special requests when you book instead. See how to book the test.
Check the rules for your application
Whether you need the test depends on the type of application you are making. GOV.UK says to check the guidance and application form for your application. Immigration rules change, so always check:
If you do need to take it, start with what the test is and our study plan.
