How to pass the Life in the UK test – a study plan that works

Updated 15 October 2026 · Independent study guide – not official government information.

The Life in the UK test is not difficult because the questions are tricky – it is difficult because it tests precise facts: dates, numbers, names and places from the official handbook. The good news is that facts can be learned. Here is a plan that works.

1. Use the official handbook as your source

You are only tested on information from Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents. Everything you study should come from it. The handbook is available from the official Life in the UK shop linked from GOV.UK, and our app includes the complete handbook text, chapter by chapter.

2. Study one chapter at a time

The handbook has five chapters. Do not try to read it all in one go:

  • Week 1: Chapters 1 and 2 – values, principles and what the UK is. Short, and a good warm-up.
  • Week 2–3: Chapter 3 – history. The longest chapter and the one with the most dates.
  • Week 3: Chapter 4 – modern society: religion, festivals, sport, arts and places of interest.
  • Week 4: Chapter 5 – government, the law and your role.

After each chapter, answer practice questions on it straight away. Testing yourself helps you remember far more than reading again.

3. Practise with questions, not just reading

Answering questions makes you recall facts, which is what the test asks you to do. Use practice tests with instant feedback while you learn: when you get a question wrong, read the explanation and the part of the handbook it comes from.

Try our free Life in the UK practice questions – each comes with an explanation.

4. Go back to your weak questions

Most people keep getting the same kinds of questions wrong. Keep a list – or let the app do it. Our app has a weak questions practice mode: the questions you get wrong come back until you get them right, and the ones you keep missing come first.

5. Take full mock tests

Once you have covered the handbook, switch to mock tests: 24 questions in 45 minutes, with no answers shown until the end – just like the real test. They show you whether you are really ready.

Book your test when you pass mock tests comfortably several times in a row – not after a single lucky pass. Each attempt at the real test costs £50.

6. Learn the tricky question types

  • “Which TWO…” questions – you must choose both correct answers to get the mark.
  • True or false statements – read every word; one wrong detail makes a statement false.
  • Similar names and numbers – the wrong options are often close to the right one (similar dates, similar places).

7. If English is not your first language

The test is normally taken in English, but you can understand the material in your own language first and then learn the English terms. Our app translates every question, explanation and the whole handbook into 13 languages, and you can switch to English with one tap. Read more about studying in your own language.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I study for the Life in the UK test?

It depends on how much of the handbook is new to you. Many people study for a few weeks, a little every day. Book the test once you pass full mock tests comfortably several times in a row.

Are the practice questions the same as the real test?

No. Real test questions are not published. Good practice questions are written from the official handbook and help you learn the same facts, but they are not the official test questions.

What is the hardest part of the Life in the UK test?

Most people find the history chapter and questions about exact dates, numbers and names the hardest, because they need precise recall rather than general knowledge.
